I have not reported the sleeping teacher's aide to anybody at C.'s school. But today, one of C.'s former teachers - an outstanding educator - phoned me by chance. I related the incident to her and enjoyed her commiseration.
Two years ago, C.'s school fired this gem of a teacher for the sin of turning 68 years old. In energy, devotion and intelligence she far surpassed the other teachers. For a while, missing the children she'd loved and taught, she visited the school regularly. But no more. These days, she says, it's too painful for her to see the laziness, indifference and incompetence that have infected the school.
Those are my blunt words. She expressed the changes more delicately.
